Maldigestion syndromes in dogs and cats are well recognised by the veterinary profession. One such condition is Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI). This disturbance of the pancreas will result in a decrease in digestive and absorptive abilities.

Formula

A highly active enteric coated porcine derived enzyme combination including:

• Lipase
• Amylase
• Proteases

Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency

Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) is recognised as both a primary, and a secondary, condition. Primary causes of EPI include Pancreatic Acinar Atrophy (PAA), which commonly occurs in German Shepherds, or congenital pancreatic hypoplasia. The most common secondary cause is as a sequel to chronic pancreatitis (CP). CP can cause fibrosis of the pancreas and lead to a reduction in functioning acinar cells.

Chronic pancreatitis is the most common cause of EPI in cats. EPI may also manifest secondarily during acute inflammation or pancreatic neoplasia.

A recent randomised, double blinded, placebo controlled trial found that dogs with EPI showed significant weight gain when given LYPEX®.

This weight gain was significantly greater than in the control group, who had been given an uncoated enzyme product.
